Institution

Institution

What is institution?

  • Institutions is where there are rules and values controlling you and telling what to do.
  • Institution is in a business, at home and at school, because in all of these places you have rules, codes and values to follow.
 Institution:

  • Institution is 'The press' and 'TV'.
  • Everyone is aware of the values and codes of:
  1. What is produced.
  2. The producers.
  3. relationship between them and us as individuals.
  • For example, we think of journalists as sharing the same set of values as their newspapers.

 What is a conglomerate?

  • Conglomerate is a company that produces more than one type of media, but we do not associate them with it.
  • The “Big5” are the wolds 5 biggest media corporations, people are taught to believe that they only own one company.

These are:
  • Walt Disney > Walt Disney pictures.
  • Sony > Columbia.
  • Time Warner > Warner Bros
  • News Corporation > 20th Century Fox
  • Viacom > Paramount pictures
It is impossible to avoid these five companies because they own so many smaller companies.
For example The Walt Disney Company own:
Walt Disney pictures, Disney Land, Miramax Films, ABC, Disney Channel, ESPN, A+E Networks, LifeTime, ABC Family, Jetix, Marvel, Touchstone Films, Pixar Animation Studios and more!

The Walt Disney company disassociate themselves with Miramax Films and Touchstone Films because, Disney's name is associated with fairytales, princesses and magic.  Walt Disney Films are targeted at young children, where as Miramax and Touchstone Films are aimed at a older audience. they also involve things such as nudity, violence and explicit language, which Disney does not want to be associated with, as it is associated with the disney films.

By owning so many companies they can get a wider range of audience and make more money. They also buy into independent companies to strengthen their position.

Preliminary Task

Preliminary Task

What was effective?

I think that the continuity of the door was effective because we got it in the right place and
the scene was continuous, as the door was in the same place.

What you learnt?
I learnt that the cameraman should be careful of where they should stand as I was in the window, when we filmed it. I also learnt that we should be careful on where we are filming, as we had a lawnmower in the background, so we could not hear the people talking, and in some parts there was no lawnmower noise.

What will you do differently?
I will make sure there is no background noise and that the camera is steady and there is no unnecessary zooming in or out. I will also make sure that the cameraman is not in the shot. I would also change the shot reverse shot because, when the shots change, the zoom is different. I would also be more aware of where we are filming, because in some parts of the clip there was a lawnmower in the background noise and in other parts there is no lawnmower is the background.

What went well?
We perfected the continuity of the door, as is was in the same place and we stuck to the 180 degree rule, and the flow of the film was consistent. we also did our shot reverse shot well, as it had a good flow to it although it was a bit off in some parts.

What went wrong?
You can see the cameraman in the window and the lawnmower sound is in the background and in some parts of the film there is no lawnmower sound so you can tell that we took it from another piece of filming. The editing was a mismatched because of the zooming was in different places.

Film Review Pitch Perfect

Film review on Pitch Perfect.

Introduction:
I am going to review the film Pitch Perfect, because it is one of my favourite films.
This film is about The Bellas, an all-girl singing group, that only sing female pop songs and their perfect looks. They are forced to re-group after an epic fail at last year’s final.
Among the new group members is a freshman called Beca (played by Anna Kendrick that stared in twilight), she is an independent, who’s ambition is to become a DJ with no interest in the college life.
But after getting to know the group of girls including Fat Amy (played by Rebel Wilson from Bridesmaids), Beca has a new outlook and takes it upon herself to help the Bellas find their new look and sound to get back into the competition.
Genre and settings:
The film is based in a college and it is based on a musical competition that the college students are involved in. The genres to this film are romance, comedy and musical. The film has an age restriction of 12 on it, this is because it contains moderate language and frequent moderate sex references.
Point of view:
The film is based on Beca and how she is trying to help the Bellas to achieve their dream. It also shows us how she makes friends and what she wants to do in the future.
My opinion:
I think that the film is really funny and I love the way they can make all of the music with their mouths and the do not use any instruments. I think that this film is inspirational to young teenagers that want to become and a-cappella singer

Film idea

My plan so far.

  • We are all getting ready for a party.
  • We see a shadow in megan's door way, Megan gets filmed putting her stereo on ,then it swaps to me putting me stereo on.
  • I get filmed putting on make up, then when we look in the mirror Abby is looking back putting her make up on.
  • Abby zips up her dress and it changes to Chantelle zipping up her dress.
  • Then Chantelle calls me then Abby. (four panel screen)
  • Abby suggests to call Megan.
  • Megan's screen is black.
  • It then zooms into her phone ringing.
  • Then the shot moves to megan lying on the bed dead.
  • We then see the killer walking out of Megan's room.
  • And we see her dress hanging up ready for her to put on.
  • The opening credits are coming up over the film.
  • The title of the movie comes up at the end saying Who's Next in blood red, with a black grainy screen.
  • After the title there are quick shots of me, Abby and Chantelle.

Characters:
  • Megan > Scarlet
  • Kimberley > Cassie
  • Chantelle >Eva
  • Abbie > Riley
  • Daniel > Killer

Why I chose media studies

Why I chose Media Studies.

I chose media studies because I love films and I see myself as being creative. I enjoy creating things and I would love to work in film making. I also chose media studies because I like to see how things such as movies are made, and how much work it takes to make a short clip.

I am very interested in learning about making films and I hope to continue this in the future.
