In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
We chose to use a
thriller genre. We wanted to use a thriller genre, because there was a death in
our film opening and you usually see deaths within thriller movies.
Having a death in
our movie opening, gave us the idea of having more deaths within our film, if
we were to continue to proceed making the whole film. Therefore, we thought to
make our opening into a thriller, due to the fact that we thought that it would
fit the thriller genre criteria.
When we were writing
our script, we wanted to show the audience that the killer was present in the
beginning scene. Our initial idea of doing this; was to have a shadow of the
kill on the floor of Scarlet’s bedroom doorway.
However, while we
were filming the scene we found out that, we could not get the shadow figure
that we were aiming for, so we improvised and came up with the idea of having
the killer’s hand on Scarlet’s bedroom door.
We found that having
the killer’s hand on Scarlet’s bedroom door was good, however, it did not have
the same effect as the shadow would have had, by this I mean that the shadow
would have looked more creepier than the hand, although the hand does bring a
unnerving feel to the scene.
When we had the hand on the door, we did not take much notice to it, as it was in the background of the scene, therefore is was not that obvious to us, so we tough if it did not stand out to us then it will not stand out when our audience were watching it. The hand also looked like it was meant to be there; as a result when we came to editing it we decided to have a close up of the killer’s hand and have it fade in and out during Scarlet’s initial scene, this would make it clear to the audience that firstly the hand was there and secondly it was not meant to be there, we did this by adding a single sudden drum beat at the time of the hand appears on the screen.

We had the other
girls in the film opening ring Scarlet’s phone, we wanted the other girls to panic
over Scarlet, as she did not answer the phone, and she is the type of person to
pick up the phone on the first ring, she never lets it ring off. We did this
because we wanted to make the audience think something had happened to her and
we left it a bit before showing them what had happened.

When we were filming the death scene, we had to film it a few times, because the lighting was too dark. We were trying to aim for a fairly dark room, however, at first the lighting was way too dark. We were trying to aim for this lighting, because we thought it would give a more eerie feel to the whole scene.
This scene would
have also been more successful if, we had also put the blood running towards
her neck and shoulders, as she was lying down, so this would be more logical to
have the blood running this direction, as it would not have just made a patch
on her vest, she would have bleed more if she was really stabbed. It would have
brought a more realistic feel to the whole film if we cut a hole in Scarlet’s
vest, so it would have looked like she had really been stabbed.
I think that it
would have been more effective if we did an extreme close up of her face, with
her eyes open and slowly zoomed out to reveal the rest of her body, as it may
have built up more tension for the audience and if Scarlet had her eyes open as
it would make the audience think that she is not dead at first, however, as the
camera zooms out they realise that she is dead. This would have made our film
opening fit more of the thriller genre criteria, as it would have unnerved the
audience.
We also have creepy,
sorrowful music playing during Scarlet’s death scene, this helped build up the
tension because it drew your attention to the scene. We decided to keep the same
piece of music playing throughout the scene and through the title, because it
changes slightly. Our title is red to replicate the colour of blood and the
font looks like someone wrote it in blood, which is also uncomforting.
